The How To Guide for:  Starting a New Chapter

   1.  Introduction
The International Board of Directors (BOD) of Alpha Lambda Tau
International Social Fraternity appreciates your interest in starting a chapter.
The following structure outlines the steps and procedures necessary for
creating a new interest group, colony, and eventual chapter of
Alpha Lambda Tau fraternity.  Although this is an involved process and
requires both time and energy,  you will find that the activities below will
create memories you will take with you for the rest of your life.  Remember
that you are not alone through this process.  We encourage you to maintain
regular contact with the Vice President of Expansion who can assist you
       through this process. .

    2.  Interest Group Recognition
To begin the interest group process, two or more interested students must
submit their name, address, phone, and e-mail (if applicable) addresses as
well as the name and address of their university to the
     . ---------->>>> INTEREST GROUP FORM!
Upon approval, the BOD will forward promotional material, including press
releases, sample flyers and "The Colony Guide" to assist in your local
      promotion.

    3.  Colony Recognition
To achieve colony status, the interest group must have five or more interested
qualified students and complete the COLONY RECOGNITION FORM!
This form serves to outline the groups' intentions, satisfy all necessary fees,
acknowledge an understanding of Alpha Lambda Tau's Mission, and provide
a complete listing of all names, e-mail addresses, and phone numbers of
students in the group.  Upon approval, a Pledge Induction Ceremony, to be
administered by a representative of the BOD, will be scheduled.  This
ceremony serves to recognize colony members as pledge brothers of ALT.
This begins the pledge program for the Alpha Class of the soon to be chapter.
A colony member will be designated as the Pledge Director and he will be
given a copy of the Pledge Education Manual.  He will be responsible for
directing all pledge education requirements and other required activities as
mandated. (i.e. community service and fundraising)

   4.  Neophyte Status
Upon the successful completion of the Alpha Pledge class requirements, an
official ceremony will be conducted by a representative of the BOD.  This
ceremony is the final step for pledges before becoming a fully recognized
active member of Alpha Lambda Tau Fraternity.  The transition of the colony
to become a recognized chapter requires additional steps for completion.
Upon completing those steps, the Neophytes will simultaneously become
      Initiated brothers.

   5.  Beta Pledge Class
Alpha Lambda Tau requires a minimum of ten qualified students to be
recognized as an active chapter.  To achieve this goal, a second pledge class
during the colony process may be required to achieve the minimum threshold
of ten or more members.  If, in the Alpha pledge class, more than ten (10)
qualified students achieve Neophyte Status, the colony may move on to
Chapter Initiation.  However, in most cases, colonies will need to conduct a
Beta Pledge Class to meet these goals.  The requirements for the Beta class
are identical to those of the Alpha class.  The Alpha class will be responsible
for conducting the rush and pledge training of this class.  Yet, a representative
of the BOD will conduct the Beta Pledge Class Induction and Neophyte
      ceremonies respectively.

   6.  Chapter Recognition
For a colony that has completed all of the above requirements to "cross-over"
and become a chapter of Alpha Lambda Tau, a CHARTER FORM  must
be completed and approved by the BOD.  Upon approval by the BOD, a
Chapter Chartering and Brother Initiation Ceremony will be scheduled.  At
this ceremony, both the Alpha and Beta classes will be initiated.  This
ceremony will be administered by the Trustee or his appointed representative.

This completes the basic outline of the procedures necessary to create a new
group of Alpha Lambda Tau and see it through to completion.  While this
completes the "Start A Chapter" process, this is only the beginning of the on-
going process of maintaining a healthy active chapter of Alpha Lambda Tau.

   Procedural Timeline
Interest Group Recognition                             Less Than 30 Days
      Colony Recognition                                                       30 - 60 Days
      Alpha Pledging                                                                  6-8 Weeks
      Beta Pledging*                                                                   6-8 Weeks
Chapter Recognition                                          Less Than 30 Days

The above timeline is a projected outline for completion.  Many factors may
cause this data to vary.  Groups will be monitored throughout the process by
the BOD to stay within reasonable limits of this outline.

It is clearly in the best interest of Alpha Lambda Tau to create and maintain
healthy chapters, therefore the BOD looks forward to working with your
group to complete this process and create new chapters of our fraternity..
