Conference at UNLV July 14 through 16
A leadership conference; open to any lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender,
questioning, or straight-allied youth who are college age (or below); will
be held July 14 through 16 at UNLV. Scheduled keynote speakers are
actor/singer Anthony Rapp and XY magazine Editor Peter Ian Cummings.
Attendance at the Millennium Youth Conference is free for Clark County
residents. For non-Clark County residents, there will be a minimal
charge of $30 to cover the cost of lodging and food. Registration
is due by July 7, after which there will be a $20 late charge for anyone
wishing to sign up. The Conference will kick off on Friday, July
14 with an Introduction Ceremony, featuring keynote speakers Anthony Rapp
and Peter Ian Cummings. Rapp is an actor, singer, and writer who
appeared in the original production of Broadway's Rent, and in teh recently
released movie, Road Trip. He has extensive television, Broadway
and film credits. Cummings is the editor of XY magazine, the
worldd's largest publication deirected at a gay youth market. Both
have played active roles in addressing gay youth issues over the past several
years. The Introduction Ceremony will also feature Mirage Director
of Government and Community Relations Punam Mather who will dedicate the
goals of the weekend. Local drag diva Sasha Scarlett is helping coordinate
the evening's entertainment which will consist of talented local youth.
The Introductory Ceremony will be followed by a reception to meet the Conference's
special guests. Workshops scheduled on Saturday include diverse topics
such as leadership skills, self-esteem, gay culture, HIV/AIDS information,
self defense and homophobia in schools. Professional and community
leaders who are volunteering their time will teach the workshops.
The conference will also feature many educational workshops and forums
presnted by Alpha Lambda Tau - a fraternal organizations which provides
students friendly social interaction and the benefits of a professional
business network of affiliates by creating a "safe" and "fun" atmosphere
to promote the bonds of brotherhood and leadership development - with topics
including: Student Money - writing scholorship and/or grant funding request,
Organizational Development - strengthening your organization from within,
Officer Training - how to develop your officers and more efficiently manage
your resources, Fundraising - how to ask for, and get money for your organizations'
programs, Community Involvement - how to energize your community to work
towards your goals, and Ideas 101 - an interactive forum discussing group
creative and engaging activities for your organization. Sunday July
16, will inlude fun activities and information for and about Alpha Lambda
Tau. The groups' mission is "To provide social, educational, financial,
career, and character building opportunities for gay, bisexual, transgender,
adn alternative lifestyle friendly male college students through motivational,
creative and meaningful recreational, scholastic, and community service
programs." Aside from the obvious benefits of the program, conference
attendees will be able to create contacts and build friendships with similar
organizations and individuals in a casual and save drug-free environment.
An optional trip to Wet n' Wild (not included in conference costs) is planned
so that participants can make the most of the scorching Las Vegas Heat.

A limited number of scholarships are available for out-of-town delegates,
but they are going quickly, according to Keys.
